At the recent inauguration of telecentres throughout Nepal, Raghuji Panta, Advisor for the Prime Minister said that such telecentres would help to alleviate poverty within Nepal, and reduce the digital divide between rural and urban communities. The event was held at Thecho village, Lalitpur district of Nepal on Sept.12, 2009, and Raghuji Panta took the opportunity to warn youth that despite these telecentres being a good resource for knowledge and information, the youth and their guardians should be careful about accessing websites containing negative or harmful content.

This telecentre was named 'Public ICT Services Centre' was sponsored by the Wold Bank, and delivered by Nepal Telecommunications Authority(NTA).

Ananda Khanal, Director of NTA expressed happiness in providing assistance to rural communities with more than 50 telecentres throughout Nepal through implementation of local community organizations. He also expressed pride in being involved in the month long 'basic hardware and software application' training to all telecentres managers which was a new component from already existing telecentre projects launched by other organizations, and looks to make telecentres more self sustaining.
Gyan Ratna Maharjan, Chairperson of the implementing local organization called Jagat Sir Memorial Trust, chaired the inauguration ceremony program.
Bhakta Raj Ranjit, chairperson of Synergy Nepal(SN) discussed the importance of all telecentres having strong financial sustainability, to achieve this they should adopt a hybrid model of generating incomes by providing services, charging nominal fees and in turn generating sustainable revenue in a non profit approach. He also emphasized SN holistic approach of socio-economic development in rural areas of Nepal in order to meet different needs of each community granting them rightful access to information.
SN is implementing 13 telecentres in rural and remote villages in 10 districts under the project 'Scaling up of Public ICT Services Centre'. There are other 12 telecentres funded by European Commission |
