Current Executive Director of Synergy Nepal, Mr. Bhakta Raj Ranjit, worked as a Project Manager for Women Empowerment Program (WEP) implemented by Pact, Washington DC based INGO. WEP was initiated in 1998 with the principle that dependency is not empowering. The program provides training to empower women through an innovative program integrating literacy, micro-finance and micro-enterprise training and an understanding of legal rights and advocacy. Within three years of program implementation, 125,000 of Nepal's poorest women have increased their literacy rate from 39% to 90%, while supporting the creation of thousands of savings groups and over 1,500 savings-led village banks. From their savings pool, the beneficiaries- women are able to start over 65,000 new micro-enterprises that have generated annual revenues in excess of $10 million. This resulted in WEP winning five international awards.
Having more consolidated ideas, thoughts and experiences working to meet nation's sustainable development needs, Synergy Nepal strives to build a knowledge society. People are intensively encouraged to use the information and communication technology through which they can create, learn and share the knowledge of peace, democracy, human rights, micro-finance, microenterprises, formal and non-formal education, health and environment.
At present, SN has a strong network with more than 100 local NGOs in different districts because of Pact's programs implemented through about 1,200 local NGOs.
Synergy Nepal, under previous name: SEE, has implemented various formal and non-formal education and skill development-training programs for the poor and particularly to marginalized women. One such program was called Appreciative Planning and Action (APA), which trained villagers from Bandau Danda, Bhumlutar of Kavre district in sanitation, including building toilets and human waste management. |
